Where does the time go?!?

I can’t believe it’s been three weeks since our last blog post!  It’s been one of those things that I keep moving toward the bottom of my to-do list… oops!

We haven’t travelled outside of Shanghai in awhile, so this post will only be quick update of funny Shanghai moments.  :-)

1. Vinegar drink

Tonight we tried a new restaurant called Qimin.  The food (hot pot) was great and very easy to walk to from our apartment.  My Chinese teacher told me there is a Chinese province where the people drink vinegar at the end of their meal, but I had never experienced it for myself until tonight.  See Exhibit 1, 2, and 3

Bottoms up!

Yes, I drank mine too.

Rob said he thought the drink was good, but I thought it just tasted like vinegar…. ick!!

2.  Chinese shoes

I had read on a popular Shanghai blog about a local shoe company and decided to go check it out.  I was happy to pay my 6 USD in exchange for a pair of pretty snazzy (yeah, you heard me…. they’re “snazzy”) sneaks.  See below for a display of my modeling techniques.  I’m thinking of submitting these pics to the company  to get started on my career as a foot model.

3.  Rob bought yogurt again, thinking it was milk.  He just never learns.

4. A coffee shop with no hot dogs allowed

85 degrees is a well known coffee and tea cafe in Shanghai.  We went there tonight to pick up some boba (for those that don’t know, it’s milk tea w/ tapioca balls mixed in) and noticed this hilarious sign.  I guess hot dogs don’t go well with coffee and tea.

That’s all for now.  I hope to add a few more things soon!!!

Drinking vinegar? What is that all about? Cute shoes Ashley. Have you received my card as yet?

  2. ashley says:

    Grandma,

We just received your card today! Thank you!!

We’re not sure exactly what the vinegar is for, but we think it’s supposed to help with digestion…? All I’ve been told is that it’s “healthy.”

  3. Dad east says:

What does the Chinese say under the hot dog?

  4. Dad east says:

I noticed you took a picture of the sign that said no pictures.

  5. ashley says:

hahahha. We noticed that as well!

Unfortunately, I can’t quite see the characters to see if I can read them. Somehow, I doubt it says “no hot dogs allowed.” :-)

  7. Rob says:

I tried looking it up by drawing the characters on this site (http://www.nciku.com) and looks like the last three are “use outside food.” So probably says no outside food allowed, which is what we’d guessed.

Ash and I wanted boba in our tea but didn’t know how to say it. I tried “little candy things” but the cashier didn’t understand, so we gave up. Then when I got my tea it way too sweet, and I remembered that “candy” is the same word as “sugar,” so she may have added a bunch due to my botched communication attempt.

Grandpa M used to take a shot of daily vinegar. Something about no stomach problems or digestion issue? Don’t know how he managed that. Even seeing the vinegar smoothie made my stomach churn. I see they have guide dogs in Shanghai which are allowed inside. Wonder what the little dog in front of the guide dog is for. They allow sm. dogs inside? Shoe model…..you look like Anne Boleyn.

  9. Grandma says:

Are you talking about Grandpa Mawhorter drinking vinegar? If he did I have no recollection. Perhaps it is something Bill remembers. Is that what gave him ulcerative colitis? Hmmm.
